Raising the Bar: Harassment in the Workplace

Casino mogul, Steve Wynn, notoriously made headlines with the news of his rampant sexual harassment scandal; a costly situation for Wynn and Wynn Resorts. The biggest fine in its history, the Nevada Gaming Control Board reached a $20 million dollar settlement with Wynn Resorts, four-times larger than any previous for Nevada.

“[Our executives] fell short of their culture and commitment in perhaps one of the most important areas for an employer—focusing on its employees.”

– Wynn Resorts

Times are changing. In 2018, Becky Harris, then-chairwoman of the Gaming Control Board and the first women in its history, proposed changes to Regulation 5 to strengthen sexual harassment safeguards, training, processes and procedures. The Nevada Gaming Control Board and Gaming Commission oversees nearly 3,000 licensees, governing gaming operations within Nevada. It’s a much needed and commendable effort in a state which “leads the nation in sexual harassment complaints per capita,” according to a statement by the Equal Employment Opportunity Commission and Bureau of Labor Statistics. Bloomberg poignantly notes “few places in the U.S. are more perilous for women workers than Vegas.”

Apart of the proposed amendments to Regulation 5, the Nevada Gaming Control Board included a comprehensive 16-point checklist around sexual harassment policies and procedures.

How does your sexual harassment policy match up? Take our assessment and find out!

Test your sexual harassment policy against the Nevada Gaming Control Board’s 16-point checklist. Your score will be calculated at the end of the survey.

It’s more important than ever for companies to challenge the status quo. Otherwise—like we’ve seen over the last years—it’s only a matter of time before the lack of preparation and foresight returns as a bet your organization cannot afford to pay.
